About the Immigration Compliance Unit (ICU)
In May 2012, with the support of Medical School Administration and department chairs, the Office of the Dean created the Medical School Immigration Compliance Unit (MS-ICU). The MS-ICU assists Medical School departments in identifying and applying for the correct visa type on behalf of foreign nationals coming to the Medical School. The ICU, in consultation and in support of the UM International Center, ensures that the Medical School remains in full compliance with all federal immigration laws.
Departments are required to process all foreign nationals coming to or extending their time at the Medical School through the online immigration intake form, including but not limited to visiting scholars, employees, observers, research fellows, volunteers, and faculty.
Once ICU validates the visa type, the MS-ICU works with the International Center to apply for the visa. It is recommended that the visa process take place concurrently with the appointment process.
The Immigration Intake website gives department representatives a way to initiate the process by entering information for ICU, in consultation with the International Center, to recommend a correct visa type and assist in visa processing.
