Third-Year Review

The Office of Faculty Affairs offers a review for all assistant professors and assistant research scientists in their third year on a track. This review is in addition to the faculty member's annual department review.

The third-year review is mandatory for Instructional and Research track faculty. It's optional but strongly encouraged for Clinical Track faculty. Reviews are conducted by the assistant dean for that track.

During the review, we'll discuss any concerns a faculty member may have in his or her academic life. We'll also help identify strengths and potential weaknesses, and we'll provide information about the promotion process at the Medical School.

This review is also the time to evaluate whether a faculty member needs to change tracks. The Provost requests that any track changes happen early in a faculty member's career, around the third year.

The faculty member should look for a reminder in June from the Office of Faculty Affairs about the third-year review process. Reviews may happen at the beginning or the end of a faculty member's third year, depending on the person's start date at U-M.
