Third and Sixth Year Reviews

The Office of Faculty Affairs conducts a review for all research assistant professors and assistant research scientists in the third and sixth years of appointment. The reviews are required for research track faculty. This review is separate and in addition to the faculty member's annual department review.

Reviews are conducted by Aruna Sarma, Ph.D., Assistant Dean for Research Faculty.

The reviews provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns that a faculty member may have in his or her academic life and help to identify strengths or potential weaknesses. Information will also be provided about the Medical School promotion process.

Faculty will be contacted initially between their second and third year to coordinate the review with their respective dean.  These meetings happen throughout the academic year.  Faculty will again be contacted to set up an additional review between their fifth and sixth year if they have not been proposed for promotion.

For Basic Science Department Faculty on the research track, their Department Chairs and CDA’s will be notified by the Office of Faculty Affairs that a 3rd or 6th year review with the Assistant Dean for Research Track Faculty should be scheduled.

The Basic Science Department will arrange for a preliminary third-year review meeting between the faculty member and the Department Chair, and/or a mentor or launch team. The Department will review the faculty member, and provide a written assessment that will be sent to Lisa Turek (laturek@umich.edu) in the Medical School Office of Faculty Affairs along with the faculty member’s CV (in medical school format).

The Assistant Dean for Research Track Faculty will conduct the 3rd or 6th year review and prepare a written summary assessment of whether the Basic Science Department Faculty member appears to be progressing well and is on track for promotion. This summary assessment will be sent to the Basic Science Department Chair and the faculty member.

If there is an agreement by the Chair and the Assistant Dean for Research Track Faculty that the Basic Science Research Track faculty member is not on track, a written plan for making progress will be co-developed and shared with the faculty member.
