Leading in the Lab

Leadership and management skills are critical for a successful career in science. This workshop has been designed to meet the specific needs of faculty researchers who run labs.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Communication: Participants practice with a model that helps them evaluate their day-to-day communication and focuses on getting buy-in or resources from peers.

  • Giving feedback: Participants learn how to give appropriate feedback in the lab and how to formulate constructive criticism without offending anyone. This is one of the key stills for building trust and rapport within a team and improving everyone's (including the leader's) performance.

  • Team dynamics: Leaders need to be aware of the dynamics in their team and to respond appropriately at different stages in your team’s development. In this module participants will develop a basic plan to improve their team’s performance.

Facilitated by:  Instructors from EMBO, an organization of more than 1800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences.
