Journey to Freedom Bus Tour

This opportunity is open to faculty and staff.

Join us for the African American Cultural and Historical Museum (AACHM) of Washtenaw County’s Journey to Freedom Bus Tour. This tour is now part of the National Park Service/U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program and is a docent-guided bus tour that will take you on a three-hour journey to explore some of the most important African American historical sites in Washtenaw County.

Led by AACHM Board of Directors and current program chair Deborah Meadows, the tour offers a unique opportunity to learn about the powerful stories that shaped this nation.

Tour sites include:

  • The AACHM museum
  • A Pittsfield Township cemetery linked to one of the earliest Black families in Washtenaw
  • The historic black community in Ypsilanti and/or Ann Arbor
  • The Starkweather homestead in Ypsilanti
  • The Ann Arbor home of an Anti-Slavery minister

Most sites can be viewed from the bus, with a few opportunities to get off the bus at select locations with minimal walking. The tour is sponsored by the Office of Faculty Development and costs of the tour and transportation will be covered for all participants. Lunch will also be provided.

Don't miss out on this unique and educational experience to discover the important history embedded in the fabric of North American culture.

Registrants will convene at 9:00 a.m. at the South State Street Commuter Lot (2694 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104) to begin the tour. The tour is scheduled to conclude at 12:00 p.m., and registrants will be dropped off at the same location. Please note that the bus is not wheelchair accessible.
