Unconscious Bias in Faculty Hiring & Selection
This workshop, facilitated by the Office for Health Equity & Inclusion, is open to faculty (and staff, if applicable) involved in faculty hiring and search committees. It replaces Faculty Development's previous STRIDE workshops. Faculty may also still attend STRIDE training offered through the ADVANCE Program each Fall.
If you are faculty or a staff member and hiring for a hybrid, staff or house officer position, you can also take alternative training that focuses on those specific positions. You can find the sessions and register for them in Cornerstone.
This course will help participants examine our Medical School faculty hiring cycle and how to implement practices that mitigate bias. We strongly encourage all faculty who sit on faculty search committees to attend.
Learning Objectives
- Consider current context in which we are making important decisions related to hiring
- Through exploration of common biases, identify how bias can influence hiring-related decisions for faculty
- Discuss how we can practice more conscious awareness in assessing selection and hiring workflows to mitigate unintended effects of bias in the hiring process, particularly in the virtual interviewing environment
